Popping the brush basicly frees it back up so you have good contact between the brush and, comm again. The brush should move freely inside the brush hood so the pressure of the spring can apply the correct pressure to make good contact with the comm. When you get sand between it; it doesnt move freely therefor it may not go back in all the way with enough pressure to make full contact. when that happens you go really slow or not at all depending on how far back the brush gets stuck. I still have a comm lathe for sale if you need one. let me know.
